The day Matthew Shepard died due to being tortured, beaten, and left to die tied to a fence is Laramie.
I wear a purple “Erase Hate” wristband from the Matthew Shepard Foundation and I think of Matthew every single day. And though I never was blessed to meet him, I feel like I know him. And I think many others can relate. Because there’s something about Matt that speaks to all of us.
What happened to him is terrible, no one is denying that. But through his death, he is able to touch so many people. I thought of Matthew on the day I was married, on the day I moved to New York, on the day I came out, and on countless other “average” days. Perhaps Matthew was alone on that cold, early October night, but he’s never been alone since.
We miss you, Matt.
